BRINGING HOLOGRAMS INTO REAL-WORLD DESIGN CHALLENGES

Radius reveals the true power and potential for revolutionary product development.

The pressure to deliver innovative, complex products and improved user experiences to market quickly has never been greater. Innovation speed, manufacturing agility, and trusted partnerships are critical to bringing ideas to life and effectively scaling them in today’s competitive market.

Microsoft created HoloLens—the first self-contained, holographic computer, enabling users to engage with digital content and interact with holograms in the real world around them. Through the use of mixed reality, Microsoft is transforming the ways we communicate, create, collaborate, and explore. By bringing people, places, and objects from the physical and digital worlds together, mixed reality environments allow users to visualize and work in a whole new way.

The traditional path of ideas, critical thinking, hardware and software design, building, testing, and analyzing are accelerated.

Hologram Applications in Healthcare Innovation: A Smart Infusion System

Healthcare. An industry at the forefront of medicine, technology, and patient care. Providing the best possible patient care requires a critical understanding of how patients and caregivers interact with devices and technology and how it informs the progression of medical product innovation and development. It also requires an accelerated innovation and product development process in order to stay current and ahead of the needs of quality patient care.

A healthcare market leader, Radius has worked with the world’s leading pharmaceutical, healthcare, and medical device companies. Drawing on decades of experience designing, developing, and manufacturing healthcare technology and humanizing user experiences, Radius imagined and demonstrated the potential of mixed reality in designing a smart infusion system at Hannover Messe 2017.This device would be capable of delivering life-saving nutrients and medications into a patient’s body with controlled precision and real-time visibility for use in hospitals and nursing homes and in-home care.

By implementing a combination of 3D printed prototypes and layered holographic CAD designs of the smart infusion system’s display component and user interface, Radius enabled instant real-time collaboration between designers and developers to speed the process of product development and testing.

Empowered with the new ability to witness user interaction and behavior with the product—and acquire immediate feedback—allowed for design refinements much earlier in the product development process.

A Unique Collaboration Reveals a Revolutionary New Approach to Product Development

Radius, in partnership with Microsoft and Jabil Corporation, is working to solve the challenges of imagining and delivering a future where digital technology speeds product design and development. Where the traditional path of ideas, critical thinking, hardware and software design, building, testing, and analyzing are accelerated.

At Hannover Messe 2017, the technology of Microsoft HoloLens enabled Radius to demonstrate innovation at the speed of digital. Through an interactive experience, 3D content came to life, overlaying holograms onto real-world components, allowing easy manipulation and design refinement, and accelerating group collaboration and user feedback. Holograms and the latest in 3D printing technology for prototyping and manufacturing were combined, revealing the true power and potential for revolutionary product development.
