Principal Industrial Designer – San Jose

DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

We are looking for a unique and talented individual with extensive design experience that will be responsible for leading and participating in product research and design projects for our clients with a design centric representation in the business development process. This position will report directly to the Director of Design, Radius San Jose with significant and collaborative interaction with members of the engineering, research, human factors, and business development teams.

In addition, this individual will take part in directing design projects, collaborating on design programs with leadership oversight and hands-on design work, and facilitating and leading client relationships. This is a highly visible and dynamic position whose focus will be on Radius site specific and global organizational initiatives.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Hands-on involvement with design development programs and design department strategic initiatives and planning to support excellence and growth
  • Contribute and articulate knowledge and experience in user-centered research and design development, offering strong visual and verbal story-telling skills to create meaningful, market-relevant solutions
  • Lead Design programs and client relationships as Project Manager, with responsibilities that span from initial client contact, to leadership of designers & teams, to project & proposal planning and proactive management of deliverables and budgets
  • Contribute to the creative culture of pride, passion and integrity, and provide proactive contribution to the strategic direction of Radius
  • Collaborate with Business Development and Radius Silicon Valley leadership team to create project proposals and strategic plans and initiatives
  • Understand and maintain the Radium Quality Management System to ensure excellence in output and service to our clients

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND AND MINIMUM WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelors in Industrial Design; Master’s degree preferred but not required
  • 10–20 years of experience as a practicing designer with a focus on product & user experience design
  • A history of developing products within multi-disciplinary teams, from inception to commercialization (including Strategy, Research, Mechanical & Electrical Engineering, Human Factors, and Manufacturing)
  • In-depth experience in design for high volume production, and design of complex product assemblies
  • Solid working knowledge and experience in user research methodologies
  • Skilled in the timely preparation of accurate, well-planned project processes, proposals and budgets

ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED:

  • Strong strategic, creative and conceptual skills
  • Excellent portfolio and highly developed design skills, including 3D modeling experience
  • Ability to lead in a highly collaborative and team-oriented environment
  • Ability to manage multiple project teams in parallel
  • Strong command of verbal and written communication, with refined interpersonal skills
  • Experience designing for consumer technology, medical, life-sciences, or consumer packaging industries a plus
  • Experience in leading creative projects, designing and executing user-centered methodologies, strategic brand design development, and design for high volume manufacturing
  • Flexibility and adaptability of approach, with a result-driven attitude to find workable solutions to every problem

We are looking for a talented, experienced, and highly motivated business development professional to join our San Jose team. This role will report to the Vice President of Business Development with significant interface with leadership and program personnel in other Radius offices. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Coordinate and administer the business development function, including the targeting, prospecting, forecasting, tracking, and strategic response to customer RFP’s to support the closure of business and sustained customer satisfaction
  • Maintain an aggressive approach to the generation of high-level BD leads and business opportunities
  • Represent business development function in internal deliberation
  • Participate in the formulation of corporate strategies, goals, and objectives
  • Promote design, engineering, and manufacturing excellence to secure meaningful business opportunities for competitive advantages for the company and its clients
  • Provide direction and product development leadership to both clients and staff in all appropriate operational and program product development activities
  • Establish a focused and committed attitude towards identifying and managing the risk aspects in all BD efforts to support our company goal of building a reputation for practical and reliable real-world product development application
  • General account management and support of ongoing product development programs, including client liaison and communication, strategic consultation, timeline management, identification and timely response to all program scope changes, risk management assessment, and the quality of the deliverable and the effective delivery and presentation of the work

Senior Strategist – San Jose

DESCRIPTION SUMMARY:

Radius Innovation & Development is seeking a talented and experienced Senior Strategist to join our Blue Sky Center in San Jose, CA. In this role you support projects that develop market, technology and business perspectives with actionable directives that guide the development of innovation and product development programs.

The Strategy team consists of curious individuals across a broad range of backgrounds including social sciences, business consulting, market research, design & design research, technology, and product management. The team applies strategy and research to all stages of the product development lifecycle – understanding user needs and market opportunities, envisioning new solutions, market validation, business modeling, requirements definition, architecture definition, design, implementation, and supporting strategies to create business successes for our clients.

This role will play a key role in supporting key client projects as well as servicing and growing client relationships from the San Jose office and throughout the Bay Area.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop an understanding of our clients’ business environment and strategy
  • Lead and/or collaborate with client engagements on a daily basis
  • Manage day-to-day project activities
  • Coordinate and support qualitative and design research activities, such as ethnographies, contextual interviews, expert interviews, group sessions, co-creation, etc.
  • Participate in developing methodologies and approaches to solve ambiguous client problems
  • Distill information from a range of sources (qualitative, quantitative, trends, etc.) to develop actionable opportunities for innovation programs
  • Be able to travel to other Radius studios and client sites for project engagements

YOU ARE/HAVE:

  • 2-5 years of pre-graduate degree or 1-2 years of post-graduate experience at an innovation, design, or business consulting firm
  • Experience with foundational consulting skills, including exposure to strategy methods and frameworks, workshop facilitation, collaborative analysis, and synthesis
  • Insatiable curiosity and structured thinking mindset
  • Experience in the primary research process and moderating and conducting interviews
  • Bachelor’s degree in social sciences, industrial design, or business. MBA is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and rigorous approach to research
  • Self-starter mentality and ability to lead project teams to great outcomes
  • You speak in a visual language. You’ve got a knack for succinctly capturing thoughts and expressing them to others. You have a strong strategic voice and point of view on where to go and why.
